It's common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set initial odds to balance their risk and may adjust them based on betting patterns, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to make accurate predictions. These traders consider a wider range of information, potentially leading to odds that differ from those found at sportsbooks. Discrepancies can arise from differing opinions on candidate strengths, campaign strategies, and potential external factors influencing the election.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular candidate, the price of those shares increases, reflecting growing confidence in their chances of winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket.
