Often, prediction market odds can differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. This can be due to differing information sources, the wisdom of the crowd effect present in prediction markets, or varying levels of risk aversion among participants. Sportsbooks typically set odds to ensure profitability, factoring in a margin, while this market reflects the collective belief of traders willing to take the other side of those bets. Discrepancies can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders attempt to profit from the price difference between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand for these shares, creating a dynamic and responsive indicator of expectations.
