Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven purely by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. Consequently, you may observe discrepancies between the implied probabilities on Polymarket and those offered by sportsbooks. These differences can arise from varying information sources, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of prediction markets as new information emerges. It's a valuable comparison point for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The more shares purchased for a specific outcome, the higher its price rises, indicating increased confidence in that result. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing sentiment.
