Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like house edges and perceived public biases into their pricing, while this market relies on traders directly assessing the probability of each outcome. It’s common to observe discrepancies, especially when new information emerges or public opinion shifts. While sportsbooks are influenced by professional oddsmakers, this market is driven by the collective insights of individual participants. Comparing the two can offer a broader perspective on the likely result.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share directly corresponds to the perceived likelihood of that outcome occurring. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades depend on correctly anticipating the event’s result. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence.
