Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the wisdom of the crowd, aims to reflect the true probability of an outcome, though discrepancies can and do occur. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks, as they are continuously updated by traders reacting to news and analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, offering a unique view compared to static odds.
