Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, varying levels of expertise among participants, and the influence of market sentiment. If there's a significant difference between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook odds, it might indicate that market participants have access to information not yet fully reflected in the sportsbook's pricing, or simply disagree with the sportsbook's assessment.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the market’s collective probability assessment. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market operates on the principle of supply and demand; if more traders believe a particular outcome is likely, they will bid up the price of shares representing that outcome, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing mechanism aims to provide a real-time estimate of the event's probability.
