Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook offerings, it could indicate a perceived mispricing or a difference in information available to each group. It’s important to compare and contrast to form your own informed opinion on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe in a particular outcome, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its predictions accordingly.
