Often, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate predictions. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the collective insight of market participants. It’s worthwhile to compare the implied probabilities from both sources to identify potential value or disagreements in expectations.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price of shares indicates what the market collectively believes is the chance of that outcome occurring. The market’s price is driven entirely by supply and demand from traders on the platform.
