Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, leading to adjustments based on new information or changing sentiment. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. Comparing these odds can provide valuable insights for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the aggregated sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a specific outcome is represented by its share price, and traders aim to profit by correctly predicting the event's result.
