Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading in the opposite direction, potentially driving the prediction market odds closer to what they perceive as the true probability. This dynamic can lead to interesting discrepancies between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market's collective assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly, providing a real-time estimate of expectations. The market's depth and volume indicate the level of confidence traders have in their predictions, and can influence how quickly prices react to news or events.
