Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often incorporating information not readily available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that differ from those found at sportsbooks. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of a decentralized market responding to new data. It’s common to see prediction markets more accurately reflect true probabilities as an event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is derived from the share price; a higher price indicates greater confidence in that outcome. Trading volume and open interest also influence price discovery, reflecting the intensity of belief among traders.
