Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own modeling and to balance action, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists, it may indicate that the crowd believes a sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a particular outcome. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived from different methodologies and motivations, and can vary based on information available to each.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of expectations, influenced by new information and changing perspectives on the Sergey Fomin vs Yusuke Takahashi match.
