Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This often leads to more efficient price discovery in the prediction market. However, sportsbook odds can still be valuable for comparison, revealing where public perception might differ from the crowd wisdom expressed on Polymarket. Discrepancies can arise due to differing risk assessments or information availability, presenting potential arbitrage opportunities for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts, reflecting the collective intelligence of the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. For example, a share priced at 60 means there's a 60% implied probability of that outcome being correct, according to traders on Polymarket.
