Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, which can sometimes differ from sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and the insights of professional oddsmakers, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies emerge, particularly when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders attempt to profit from the price variations between the two types of markets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own assessments of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence.
