Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is underrating a player's chances, the odds on Polymarket may move in the opposite direction. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the players' form. It's common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds, especially when there's strong public disagreement.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence in their victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is entirely determined by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the valuation. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants.
