Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, which can sometimes differ from sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market is driven purely by individuals wagering their own capital. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a significant amount of volume accumulates. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, differing interpretations of data, or simply the influence of public opinion. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights into the perceived value of each outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each outcome. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to represent the collective assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, meaning the more people believe a certain outcome will occur, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will climb.
