Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house biases or initial public perception. Sportsbooks set lines based on their analysis and aim to balance betting action, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information or interpretations, and these differences can present opportunities for informed traders. It’s common to see prediction markets converge towards the true probability as more information becomes available and trading volume increases.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares bought for a particular outcome, the higher its price rises, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of those trading on the platform, providing a real-time assessment of the event’s likelihood.
