Prediction market odds often differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd and differing incentives. Sportsbooks set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market allows traders to directly assess the probability of an outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market prices and sportsbook odds, it might indicate that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. It’s important to note that prediction markets can sometimes be more accurate than traditional forecasts, especially when a large and informed group participates.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants. The market’s price is driven by supply and demand, and traders aim to profit by accurately predicting the event’s outcome.
