Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance betting action, while this market allows traders to express their independent beliefs about the outcome. If prediction market participants have access to information not yet incorporated into sportsbook lines, you might observe divergence. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks, potentially offering a more accurate assessment of the event's probability. However, sportsbook odds still represent a valuable comparison point.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform’s design encourages price discovery, meaning the market price should converge towards a fair representation of the event’s true probability as more information is available to traders.
