Generally, prediction markets like Polymarket often reflect information and insights beyond those considered by traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market incorporates the wisdom of the crowd, potentially identifying undervalued or overvalued outcomes. Discrepancies can arise from differing opinions on factors like player motivation, recent performance, or even subtle strategic advantages. However, as an event approaches, the odds on Polymarket and sportsbook odds tend to converge as more information becomes available and the market becomes more efficient.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all traders involved, offering a unique perspective on the event’s potential results.
