Currently, prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the wisdom of the crowd. If sportsbooks favor one player significantly, but this market shows a more even split, it suggests traders believe the sportsbook is mispricing the probability of an upset. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of prediction markets responding to new information as it becomes available. It’s useful to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence in their victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market efficiently incorporates new information as it emerges, causing prices to adjust rapidly. Trading volume and open interest also provide insights into the strength of conviction behind each prediction.
