Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. If significant differences emerge between this market and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the crowd believes a different outcome is more likely than sportsbooks predict, or that one venue has access to unique information.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable traders are rewarded and those with inaccurate beliefs may incur losses. This dynamic process aims to converge towards a fair and accurate assessment of the event's likelihood.
