Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook odds which can be influenced by factors like public bias or bookmaker margins. Sportsbooks often set lines to balance betting action, while this market aims to represent the true probability of an outcome as assessed by traders. Over time, prediction market prices often become more accurate than traditional odds, especially as more information becomes available and trading volume increases. It's common to see discrepancies, particularly before the event begins, as the market incorporates diverse perspectives.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price fluctuates, reflecting the collective intelligence of the crowd. The higher the demand for shares of a particular player, the higher the price will climb, indicating increased confidence in their victory.
