Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market represents the wisdom of the crowd, where traders directly express their beliefs through buying and selling shares. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate than traditional forecasts, especially when there's significant public interest and information available. However, sportsbook odds can sometimes offer value if they diverge substantially from the prediction market, providing an arbitrage opportunity for informed bettors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring, making it a transparent and efficient way to gauge market sentiment. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket.
