Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market is driven by participants directly wagering on their beliefs. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence in a particular outcome. Comparing this market to sportsbook odds can reveal where the crowd diverges from professional oddsmakers.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated intelligence of the crowd and provides a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
