Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by house biases or initial public perception. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between this market and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the crowd believes the sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a particular result. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities, and neither guarantees the actual event outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price fluctuates based on supply and demand, driven by new information and changing opinions among traders. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of the event’s probability.
