Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to discrepancies, with prediction markets sometimes offering more favorable odds, especially when there’s strong disagreement with the broader public opinion. It’s common to see differences in implied probabilities between this market and sportsbook offerings, as prediction markets can aggregate diverse information and expert opinions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades contribute to their overall portfolio performance. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd.
