Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market incorporates a wider range of information and opinions. Discrepancies can arise due to differing risk assessments, information advantages, or simply variations in subjective beliefs. It’s common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information, as traders react in real-time to developments surrounding the event. Comparing the two can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform uses a constant product market maker model, meaning that the product of the share prices for all possible outcomes remains constant. This ensures that there is always a market for buying and selling shares, even with limited trading volume.
