Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows individuals to express their own predictions, leading to odds that may diverge from sportsbook lines if a significant number of traders believe the sportsbook's assessment is inaccurate. It's common to see differences, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence in that result. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket and does not rely on any external factors or oracles beyond the event's eventual outcome.
