Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market aims to reflect the true probability as assessed by traders. Often, prediction markets are more accurate than traditional polls or analysts’ predictions, as they incentivize participants to provide well-informed forecasts. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities based on different methodologies and information sets, and discrepancies can occur.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd and adjusts in real-time as new information becomes available.
