Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the differing incentives and information sources of participants. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while prediction market participants are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to prediction markets incorporating a wider range of information, including insights not readily available to sportsbooks. It's common to see discrepancies, especially early in the market's life, as the crowd's wisdom emerges. Examining these differences can be insightful when evaluating the potential value in either venue.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd. The current price indicates what traders are willing to pay for a unit of probability related to the event's outcome.
