Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there's significant public information or a perceived edge not fully captured by sportsbook algorithms. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information and potentially offer more accurate probabilities, though sportsbooks often have tighter spreads.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to represent the collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the valuation of shares in this market. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
