Often, prediction market odds diverge from those offered by traditional sportsbooks due to differences in incentives and information aggregation. Sportsbooks set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while prediction markets aim to reflect the collective wisdom of traders. If sportsbooks heavily favor one player, this market might show a different probability if traders believe the odds are mispriced. It's common to see discrepancies, particularly in events where specialized knowledge or unique information is available to market participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood.
