Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, allows anyone to trade and express their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that more accurately reflect the true probability of an event. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamics of supply and demand within each venue. It’s important to compare both to inform your own assessment.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the collective judgment of all participants, creating a dynamic and responsive valuation of the event. This allows for a fluid assessment of expectations as new information emerges.
