Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their beliefs and trade on them. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly when there's strong public sentiment or information not fully captured by traditional models. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, especially in response to breaking news or late-developing insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the aggregated forecast. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome drives up its price, while increased selling pressure lowers it. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood.
