Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market aims to reflect the true probabilities as assessed by traders. However, discrepancies can occur due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in market participants. It’s common to see this market align with sportsbook odds as the event nears, as more information becomes available and the 'wisdom of the crowd' converges, but early on, there can be notable differences.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price, and traders can profit if their prediction proves correct. The market's price is influenced by new information and trader sentiment.
