Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take positions that push the price in this market closer to their assessment. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or breaking news impacts perceptions of the likely winner.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the collective intelligence of the crowd.
