Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which can be influenced by house biases or limits on betting volume. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders profit from price differences. It’s common to see this market adjust rapidly to new information, potentially leading to odds movements that diverge from traditional sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing mechanism on Polymarket.
