Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and risk assessments, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Analyzing these differences can highlight areas where the crowd believes there's value or where sportsbooks may be mispricing the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market efficiently incorporates all available information, providing a real-time assessment of the event's likelihood.
