Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome. This market, however, is driven purely by the wisdom of the crowd, where participants directly speculate on the most likely result. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust to incorporate new information and potentially outperform traditional odds, especially as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will happen, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the latest collective intelligence.
