Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, and can sometimes differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It is common to see discrepancies, especially when there is significant public information or debate surrounding an event. Comparing the odds can provide insight into where the crowd believes the value lies, and potentially identify opportunities for profitable trading.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular player will win, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise. Conversely, if sentiment shifts, the price will adjust accordingly, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's potential results. This dynamic pricing is what makes prediction markets unique.
