Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective intelligence of traders, aims to reflect the true probability of an event occurring. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust as new information emerges and more people weigh in. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially as the event draws nearer.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous process where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures that the market odds are constantly updated and responsive to new information and changing sentiment.
