Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, leading to odds that may incorporate information not fully captured by traditional methods. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to unique information, or simply the dynamics of supply and demand within the prediction market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price will adjust accordingly, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's likelihood. The current price indicates the market's expectation of the match result.
