Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the diverse opinions of many individuals. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, the prediction market may move in the opposite direction. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges, offering a different perspective on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, offering a forward-looking assessment of the event's potential results.
