Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on a variety of factors, including public betting patterns and expert analysis, but may also include a 'vig' or commission. This market, driven by informed traders, reflects a collective forecast of the event's outcome. Discrepancies between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders capitalize on differing valuations of the same event. It's important to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The market's price discovery process allows for a dynamic assessment of the match's potential results, incorporating diverse perspectives and insights from participants.
