Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on a variety of factors, including public betting patterns and expert analysis. This market, however, is driven purely by individuals putting their capital at risk, creating a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect. It’s common to see discrepancies emerge, especially as new information becomes available or public opinion shifts. While sportsbooks may initially favor one competitor, the prediction market can quickly adjust based on the collective insights of its traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective prediction. The market's efficiency is driven by traders seeking to profit from correctly anticipating the event's result.
