Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs. If sportsbooks initially favor one outcome, this market might show a different probability distribution if traders have access to unique information or disagree with the sportsbook’s assessment. Discrepancies can arise due to varying levels of information and analytical approaches, providing potential arbitrage opportunities for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movement is driven by supply and demand, creating a dynamic market that aggregates the collective intelligence of participants. This allows for a real-time assessment of the likelihood of different results in the Offenbach TIM Handel match.
