Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set initial lines to balance betting action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of trading. It's common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information than traditional betting markets, offering a potentially more accurate assessment of probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where shares representing each possible outcome are bought and sold. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority setting the odds.
