Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It’s common to see differences emerge, especially as new information becomes available or public sentiment shifts. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders capitalize on discrepancies between the two types of odds. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on their own analysis and information. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system that reflects the collective intelligence of the market participants.
