Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by the collective opinions of individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of volume accumulates. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the same data. Analyzing both sets of odds can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket; there are no external factors influencing the pricing process. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its predictions accordingly.
